My name is Marie-Luise Groß and I am a doctoral candidate at the Center for Translation Studies of the University of Vienna. 
I am interested in how freelance translators organize work processes, manage their personal knowledge, and interact with their peers.
I chose freelance translators as a research population, because they are an excellent example of creative knowledge workers who have to act and think entrepreneurially. They are life-long learners and their actions are embedded into social and communicative contexts.
Until now, little is known about activities and (inter-)actions of knowledge workers. The majority of the studies conducted during the past decade have focused mainly on user activities in virtual environments and software design. The areas of conflict, i.e. the interplay between virtual environments and the real world, have hardly been considered. At the same time, the calls for “human” software applications, that support end-users rather than domineer them, grow louder.
Dougherty (2008: 154) emphasizes that research in this field should „acknowledge that ,techno-hype‘, or the privileging of technology per se, dominates both popular and academic thinking. While technologies are important, it is more important to dig into the complex human and social processes of knowing that underlie 21st century challenges, so we can appreciate how, when, and why technologies can be woven into those processes more effectively.“
My research focus lies on the following details in work organization and personal knowledge management:
-> Social Capital: Functional and emotional support, access to information, and learning in social networks.
-> Fragmentation and Muddling: Usage of virtual and physical artifacts.
